Meet Our New Music Director!

We were so lucky to have had a very difficult decision in selecting our new music director. We had a strong applicant pool and two very strong finalists, and each would bring incredible – and distinct – gifts that, if they were hired, our congregation would be stronger and richer as a result.

After careful discernment and listening to both where the congregation is and where we hope to be, our Search Team was unanimous in our decision. We are all delighted that we have offered the position to Benjamin Hanson, and he has accepted our offer to be our new Music Director!

We were especially impressed with Benjamin’s depth of skill and experience in choral direction, and we are so excited about the many different ways he will bring these skills to our community as we continue to emerge post-pandemic. We also experienced Benjamin as warm, steady, and thoughtful, as well as a trustworthy partner in both our preparations for and during the weekend of worship and choir rehearsal together. We believe that his background and his approach will be a very good fit for our congregation as a whole. You can read Benjamin’s fuller biography below.

Benjamin will begin his work with us in early to mid-August, depending on how his move and search for housing goes. Speaking of housing, if you have any leads for housing for him and his partner, please reach out to our Director of Finance and Operations, Katie Watkins (katie@foothillsuu.org), who is assisting them in this challenging part of moving to Fort Collins!

We knew that the risk of bringing two candidates to the whole congregation would be that some might wish we had made a different decision. However, the value of seeing how our applicants work with the whole community and in our actual settings was so high that we decided it was worth that risk. Now that we are here, I want to acknowledge that there may be some disappointment for some of you. And I understand that! It really was a difficult decision. Still, I hope that we are all able to move forward with the excitement and joy that this hire represents.

After all of the transitions and challenges of the last few years, this is a huge moment for our congregation. In many ways, this hire represents a wonderful new start for Foothills, specifically in our music ministry of course, but also as a whole. Especially as the pandemic continues to shift and as we look ahead to the next year when our new building will be completed, it feels as though the future is expanding in possibility and in healing.

Thank you to all who participated in this process. From listening sessions to choir rehearsals, your thoughtful input has been invaluable in shaping our shared vision for the future of music at Foothills and in discerning the person who can help us bring that vision to life as our Music Director.

A special thank you to our Music Search Team – Kara Shobe, Gretchen O’Dell, Georgia Peeples, Chris Hutchinson, and Jack Morgan – whose musical passion, expertise, and focused dedication to our shared mission made this process possible.

As we work through details about timing and transition, we will share more information about welcoming Benjamin into our Foothills and Fort Collins community, and ways for you to help make this new start successful and rewarding for us all.

With gratitude,

Rev. Gretchen Haley

Benjamin Hanson is a conductor and baritone with a background in church music leadership and vocal pedagogy. He holds a master’s degree in Choral Music from the University of Illinois, where he conducted many of the University’s choral ensembles and studied conducting, music history, and voice science. During his studies he also directed the choirs at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign. Before moving to Illinois, Benjamin served for several years as the Music Director at All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara, CA.

In addition to his experience leading school, community, and church choirs, Benjamin performs regularly as a solo singer. He earned an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from the Conservatory of Music at Lawrence University, where he studied voice and vocal pedagogy. He has recently performed as a soloist in J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and in the North American premiere of Johann Hummel’s Exodus oratorio, Der Durchzug durchs Rote Meer. He has a particular love for leading congregational singing through hymnody, song, and chant.

Benjamin has a passion for using choral singing to build community and inspire action, and he looks forward to making meaningful music with the community at Foothills beginning this fall. He will be relocating to Fort Collins this summer with his partner Lauren and their two cats.

Music Newsletter: Music Director Selection Process

What an exciting last two weekends we’ve had! Thank you all for being a part of welcoming and greeting and singing with our two music director candidates, Benjamin and Emily. We’ve waited a long time to have a non-interim music director, and it really hit me during these visits what a huge moment this hire represents for our community.

We are so lucky that we had such strong candidates that this decision will not be an easy one. The search team and I will be weighing a number of factors as we move towards our selection and employment offer, which we intend to make by the end of the week. Because you may be curious, I wanted to let you know how we will be moving through this discernment process.

To start, we will be returning to the job description and the visioning process that the congregation participated in over the fall. This is important because we want to ground ourselves in the specific needs and dreams we hold together. This decision is ultimately about finding the right fit for Foothills and our needs now and into the future.

As we consider the question of fit, we will be reviewing the feedback we received from the choir, from the staff, from many of you, and from our own interactions and reflections about each candidate. We will consider our interviews and the references and our sense of how each person will fit in our overall staff team, volunteers, the wider Fort Collins music community, and our congregation as a whole.

As soon as our candidate accepts our offer, we will share the news with our congregation! We are currently planning for the new music director to start in August with plenty of time to be ready for a full return to two services and a choir schedule by September.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you again for your support in making this wonderful moment possible for Foothills!

The Building Bulletin: June 2022

Thanks to everyone who attended the groundbreaking celebration! We heard some inspiring speakers and had a chance to reconnect with old friends and take photos with hard hats and shovels. After a rainy afternoon, the weather cleared, resulting in a very pleasant evening. If you are on the church grounds, take the opportunity to follow the orange outline of the sanctuary addition.

You may recall that we have two preconstruction activities: moving the gas line and moving the electric transformer. The gas line work will be completed the week of June 14th. The new location of the electric transformer has been staked out, but the City has requested a different location. Once we relocate, we should get scheduling information from the City of Fort Collins.

We have been asked why we need to move a gas line since the addition will be all-electric. The answer is that the RE building will continue to use gas furnaces until we can complete the RE remodel phase of our master plan. The gas line serving the RE building currently passes through the excavation area and must be rerouted before construction begins.

We have also made progress on obtaining our building permit. The architects have been receiving and responding to comments from the building department review. Once that is complete, other City departments need to weigh in.

We have completed the recording process, have received comments from the building department, and expect approval from other city departments by June 15th. We received approval from Poudre Fire Authority this week! Pinkard Construction company will begin erecting the fence on June 15. As a reminder, the lower (west) parking lot will be used as a staging area during construction. The entire parking lot will be unavailable. The parking lot and construction site will be fenced for security and safety.

If you attended the June 5 congregational meeting (or read the meeting packet), you saw that our estimates in the areas of AV, City fees, and construction costs are over the amount originally budgeted. The AV and construction overages are largely a result of changing needs and increased material costs due to the pandemic. Pinkard Construction is monitoring suppliers and attempting to purchase materials in advance of anticipated price increases.

Once construction starts, we’ll provide opportunities to visit the site and talk to the managers. The BET is looking forward to seeing work begin and the realization of the vision of our new sanctuary.

2022 Annual Congregational Meeting Summary

We followed our Flower Communion on Sunday with our sixth all-online congregational meeting. The annual meeting was very well attended, and we are happy to report that the congregation voted to approve the slate of nominees for the 2022-23 church year. The slate of nominees who were elected are:

Diana Hutchinson to a 3-year term as member-at-large. Thank you, Diana, and welcome to the board!

Walter Nash, who is completing his first year on the board, to a two-year position as board president. Much gratitude to you, Walter, for filling this key role.

Mary Klecan will serve the final year of Doug Powell’s three-year term. Doug resigned early to avoid any potential for conflict of interest after his wife Jenn Powell, discerned her call to serve on the staff of Foothills as operations manager. Thank you, Mary, for being willing to continue your board service for a second year in this way!

There is a second board position that remains open. The board of trustees, leadership development, and the Nominating Committee will work together over the summer to find and prepare a candidate. Pandemic disruptions created challenges for our leadership development processes and trainings over the past two years. Still, we are confident we will be able to identify and offer the appropriate candidate for the board position soon.

The board of trustees is so excited for the church year to come and is deeply grateful to the incoming slate of lay leaders who will keep this congregation running creatively, smoothly, effectively, and oriented always towards our mission.

You can watch a recording of the Annual Meeting on YouTube, and read the Congregational Packet (which includes reports from the Board President, Senior Minister, and Finance and Operations Director).

Over the course of a century, our dream of progress commonly called “the American Dream”, fundamentally changed the way we live and continues to inspire many developing countries. We are now aware of the setbacks and limits of such development policies. We urgently need to focus our efforts on changing our dreams before something irreversible happens to our planet. This documentary follows actress Melanie Laurent and activist Cyril Dion as they traverse ten countries to talk to scientists and thought-leaders about ingenious solutions to global warming.

The Beaver Believers encourage us  to embrace a new paradigm for managing  our western lands, one that seeks to  partner with the natural world to help it.  As a keystone species, beaver enrich  their ecosystems, creating the biodiversity  and resiliency our watersheds need to  absorb the impacts of climate change.

Beavers can show us the way and even  do much of the work for us, if only we can  find the humility to trust in the restorative  power of nature.
