The Building Bulletin: January 2023

Each day, we can see new developments on our building site. Work has been progressing just as quickly as before now, but it’s much more visible now – we can see our new sanctuary! There is structural steel, a cement floor, and a roof deck. Coming up is exterior framing and sheathing.

The concrete deck for the new sanctuary floor has been poured. First, steel decking was laid down, then the concrete was poured on top. Since it was very cold that week, the decking was heated from below overnight in anticipation of pouring concrete in the morning. The concrete itself is at 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it has set, it is covered with blankets to keep as much heat as possible. There is still some concrete work to be done, but it is being postponed until the weather is more cooperative.

The focus this month has been the roof. Now that the steel structure is mostly in place, the wooden roof deck has been installed. The roof deck is constructed from CLT – Cross Laminated Timber.  A crane lifted the panels onto the roof beams. They are attached to the beams from underneath using large screws.  The wood and the beams will be visible in the new sanctuary. Having the roof in place gives a better sense of what it will be like to sit inside and look out the windows.

The next step is to have the roofer add layers; R30 rigid insulation, cover board, and a membrane. The roof will be waterproof at this point. Later in construction, a metal roof will be installed.

Next up is the exterior work. The framing was delayed by the snow but will start as soon as the steel is delivered. Exterior sheathing will be added, and we’ll have an enclosed space!

New Partnership with Playcrafter Kids

As many of you know, part of our plans to fund our new expansion, include developing rental agreements to increase annual revenue. It’s our goal to do this by creating values-aligned partnerships that utilize our space in low/no use times. We are excited to announce a new rental partnership with Playcrafter Kids, a performing arts education program for young children, including a licensed preschool, after-school programs, and summer camps for kids ages 3-12.

Playcrafter Kids will host their programs out of the lower level of our Religious Education Building during weekdays. They’ll also make use of the stage in our current Sanctuary, soon-to-be social hall, for weekly performances. The area of our Religious Education Building they will be inhabiting is mostly unused during weekdays.

While this partnership is financially beneficial for us, we are also excited to share that space with a values-aligned program that helps grow young minds. We are already dreaming together about how this new relationship will offer opportunities for us to partner with Playcrafter Kids in some programs and bring new families to our building.

Additionally, we’ll be partnering with Playcrafter Kids to do some much-needed maintenance and updates to the rooms they will be using and our playground. You’ll begin to see us do that work this spring, and their program will be operating out of our building beginning in June.

Announcing New Board Member and Supports!

We are happy to officially announce that we have added some additional board supports through the remainder of this governance year (through June 2023).

First, we are officially welcoming Joan Woodbury as a board member to fill the remainder of the vacancy left when Richie Nelson resigned in the fall. She will bring her experience as a past board president and a leader in other roles over the years. She also brings her professional experience as a lawyer. She will begin her term on February 1st with a special focus on assisting with forward-thinking board meetings, change management with the by-laws transition and overall role of the board as leaders within the church.

Second, we are adding April Undy as a Linkage task force member through June. April will attend board meetings as a guest with a special focus on assisting with the linkage work of connecting with community partners over the next six months. April brings her long history with the church as a member and a trustee on the board during our challenging years of misconduct disclosure and immediate healing.

Thank you to Joan and April for stepping into these leadership roles. We are grateful for the institutional knowledge and leadership experience they bring to our work.

We had such a positive response from the vespers services in November and December that we’ll continue them in 2023! You’re invited to a candlelit service of silence, music, and meditation on Tuesday 1/24 at 6:30 pm. Anyone interested is also invited to join Benjamin before the service to practice the songs that will be sung during the service. We will learn vocal harmonies that will make the musical meditations even more beautiful.

Mark Your Calendars: Music Sunday in May!
Sunday, 5/14

On Sunday, May 14, Foothills will hold our annual Music Sunday––a worship service consisting entirely of musical offerings from and for the Foothills community. But we can’t put on this service without your help! All musically-inclined Foothills members (like you!) are invited to consider what music you could offer on Music Sunday. Individuals or groups are invited to participate. Our Music Director is happy to help with musical selection and preparation, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you sing, play an instrument, or dance! Contact benjamin@foothillsuu.org if you are interested in contributing to Music Sunday, or for additional information.

Series Invitation: Time Management for Mortals

Have you ever had a moment where you aren’t sure what year it is? Just a flash, even, where you get confused and think – wait – is it really 2023?!

Our human relationship with time is always complicated, but even more so as we attempt to emerge from what one of my friends calls the “blurs-day” feeling of the pandemic. Time is extra complicated when we’re working to claim a new sort of normal. A normal inevitably informed by a greater awareness of how quickly everything can change, how little control we have, and how we need to take advantage of whatever time we have and make it count

It hit me this week – this is the first January in two years that we aren’t starting our year with services and ministries only online.

No wonder we feel both a sense of urgency and an overwhelming sense of exhaustion! Like we need to get on with our lives and carpe diem but also there is a desire to let it all go and simply rest. There is a sense that it’s time to finally get organized and on track, and also, there is a real struggle to get started or a fear that maybe it’s actually too late. Too late for things both specific and tangible –  and also things ethereal and existential.

This January, we are digging into our relationship with time. The longing we have to manage our time and the often challenging realization that while time is infinite, human life is not.

Inspired by the book by Oliver Burkeman with the same subtitle, our series, Time Management for Mortals, invites us to trade out an understanding of “managing” time as a matter of efficiency for a practice of embracing our limits. This series is an invitation into continuous refinement of clarifying and experiencing what really matters. In this practice resides the possibility of experiencing deep time, that humbling connection to our place in a much larger arc and the incredible mystery at the heart of this universe.

We’ll kick it off this Sunday with our service celebrating our 125-year anniversary as a church. Together, we’ll look at the hopefulness of history, especially when experienced in community.

Join us at 8:30 AM (in person only) or 10:30 (in person or online).

With joy,

Rev. Gretchen
