Enhanced Privacy and Security for our Church Directory

We want to inform you about a significant update to our church directory, managed through Planning Center. This update is aimed at enhancing the security of your personal information and safeguarding our community from potential scams.

Background

Our Church Directory, accessible via ChurchCenter (either on the app or online), is available to those who have been invited. Generally only those who are eligible for membership will be invited. Each member has full control over what information they choose to share within the directory.

What Changed and Why

Recently, Planning Center has made adjustments to the privacy settings in response to increasing reports of scammers exploiting church directories. These individuals have been known to impersonate pastors or trusted church members, deceiving people into giving them money. To combat this, Planning Center has introduced a new “Privacy Mode,” which automatically hides email addresses and phone numbers from public view. Instead, you can now connect with fellow members through a secure “Contact Me” button, allowing you to stay in touch while keeping your personal information protected.

Accessing the Directory

The directory is available only to members or those deeply engaged at Foothills, with access managed by our Foothills Admin Staff. If you would like to be added to the directory and currently do not have access, please let us know by filling out this form.

Deciding What Information to Share

If you’ve been invited to join the directory, you can decide what information to share, including details about your household members. You can choose to share your photo, birthday, address, phone number, and email, as well as which members of your household can be contacted through the secure “Contact Me” process. For more detailed instructions, visit this guide.

How to Contact Someone

Although this change was made by Planning Center, the directory remains a valuable tool for staying connected within our community. To learn how to use the directory effectively and securely, we encourage you to watch the following video:

To reach out to someone, search for their profile in the directory and click the “Contact Me” button. Your message will be sent directly to their primary email address, and any replies will come to your email. If the contact option is not available, it means that the person has chosen not to share their contact information.

An Alternate Way: Sharing Information with Group Members

At Foothills, we recognize that with a large congregation, sharing your information with everyone might not feel comfortable. However, you can still share your contact information with members of your small group or event attendees, such as at a potluck.

Using the ChurchCenter app, you can choose to share your information with the groups you are part of. By default, your name is visible to other group members if chat is enabled for your group, and group leaders can see all your contact information regardless of your privacy settings. You can also decide whether to share your picture, phone number, and email address. These settings can be customized for all groups or adjusted individually for each group.

For more detailed instructions on how to manage your settings, please refer to this guide.

As always we appreciate your feedback and would love to answer your questions.

For questions about accessing or using the directory please contact Jenn Powell.
For questions on Data Privacy contact Rev. Sean.

Policy Corner

Foothills Privacy Policy (3.3.5) emphasizes the importance of giving you control over your personal information. While before this change every person had control over their private information on the directory, the implementation of “Privacy Mode,” further protects private information shared in good faith from falling in the hands of bad actors.

While we could disable this feature and make all contact information visible, we have chosen not to do so. This is primarily to protect our community from exploitation and scams in accordance with our Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (3.3.3.5) policy that mandates we take every measure to prevent exploitation, including in our digital spaces. By enhancing privacy in the directory, we help ensure a safer environment for all members, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

  • Decorate someone’s home for a holiday or a milestone event – Birthday, Retirement, Christmas, Easter, 4th of July.

  • Lead a hike and provide the snacks / lunch.
  • How about pet sitting, house sitting, babysitting?
  • Are you a shipshape organizer? Offer your first rate services.
  • Housecleaning, gutter cleaning – or a trip to the landfill would help someone without a truck.
  • If you love to garden, donate your time and expertise to someone – you might have new ideas for them.
  • Game night at your house, complete with fun snacks!
  • Be someone’s Personal Chef for a night – go to their house and prepare a delicious meal.
  • Host a Christmas cookie baking party and exchange.
  • Donate a gift card from your favorite restaurant or store – you might share a secret find, and perhaps you’d be helping one of our local businesses find some new customers.

The Grove & August 27, 2024 Town Hall

Last night, we met with over 50 congregants in person and online. We launched The Grove at our Town Hall meeting. The Grove is a new concept that we are initiating to help our most engaged community members to have easy access to the institutional information that they care about and that we can use your help in managing.

There are often details going on at the organizational level that are not a part of ministry but they affect how we provide ministry. Things like, the state of our building, engagement trends, financial matters, communications questions. The Grove is an intentional community to share these details with those that want them, while not overly inundating newcomers and other community members who do not need to interact with this information.

The Grove is open to anyone who wants to join. It’s an effort toward greater transparency and increased resiliency as we continue to grow in numbers.

Check out this video put together by Rev. Sean that invites you to better understand what the Grove is and how you can expect to interact with it if you join.

Contact Katie Watkins at katie@foothillsuu.org if you have questions about The Grove. We know that navigating an online app can sometimes be intimidating, so we are working on providing some tech support opportunities for anyone who needs a little extra help. More details to come.

Town Hall Updates

Quarterly Town Hall and Congregational meetings will provide in-person and online interaction for this group to connect and ask questions. At last night’s event, we shared several updates. You can watch a recording of the meeting below.

$60K Match! Help us meet the goal!

This past Sunday, over 500 people participated in Foothills’ Sunday services. In his sermon, Rev. Sean reminded us that in Universalism, there is no “them”—we are all in this life together. His words resonated deeply, inviting us into a practice of love that goes beyond divisions and brings us together in a shared journey.

Together, we create a community where belonging is at the center of everything we do, a place where everyone is seen, valued, and loved. Right now, we need your help to keep this work alive, as we’re facing a shortfall in our budgeted income. Thanks to a generous match, every dollar you give will be doubled, helping us continue to build a space where love, justice, and belonging endure. While political donation requests are everywhere, we hope you’ll also consider the profound impact your gift can have right here in Northern Colorado.

We’ve already seen the power of this message in action. More than 190 households have generously responded to our call, contributing over $53K to our matching campaign. With the generous match from the estate of Brian Woodruff, we have raised $113K of our $120K goal!

Your gift can help us close the final gap. By contributing, you are ensuring that our work of love, justice, and belonging continues to thrive—not just for today, but for generations to come. This is more than just filling an operating gap; it’s about investing in a future where everyone belongs, and where love leads the way. Give between now and Sunday, August 25th to double your impact!

Your support will help us reach our goal and continue to share and grow Universalism in our community and beyond. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to making this vision a reality.

Will you join us in this work? Together, we can ensure that Foothills remains a beacon of hope, courage, and love in a world that needs it more than ever.

Transform Our Community, Fund the Future
Capacity-Building Opportunities:

If you’re interested in helping us fund game-changing, capacity-building opportunities to deeply invest Foothills’ impact, please reach out to Katie Watkins, our Director of Finance and Operations at katie@foothillsuu.org. We have opportunities ranging from $150K to $4M that would have immediate and long lasting impact.

Invitation to the Grove & Town Hall

We’ve recently been intrigued by the science behind mycelium, or what some refer to as the “woodwide web.” It’s an intricate connection among the roots of trees and fungi in healthy forests that allows them to share resources, communicate and extends the life of the connected plants.

It made us think – what’s the mycelium of our church? How are we connected at a level that energizes and sustains our work? We’d like to invite you to join us as part of a new team and communication channel that we’re calling The Grove, inspired by this idea.

As some of Foothills most engaged members, you are already invested in the health of our community. Members of the Grove will receive timely updates on church business news and help us shape the information that is shared with the entire congregation by providing input and feedback. Content will be shared in real time through our church center app, blogs and emails. We’ll summarize the important points approximately four times a year at congregational and town hall meetings.

We’ll host our first Grove Town Hall on August 27th from 6-7:30 PM in the sanctuary and online. Below is a link to an extensive packet with lots of organizational updates and news for you to review ahead of the meeting.

We hope you’ll join us and help us continue to grow our grove, so we can keep stewarding Foothills together. We auto-opted you into this group, and if you are not interested in being a part, please let us know. Stay tuned for more details on how we’ll continue to share information and tie into the Church Center app.
