UU Climate Justice Revival

What does climate justice have to do with racial justice, gender justice, or disability justice? Are there deeper ways to understand this crisis that can lead to more impact both locally and globally?

This fall, we are joining over 300 UU congregations nation-wide for a climate revival workshop. Together we will explore new ways to frame climate justice. Expanding our understanding of climate as an intersectional justice issue that is directly connected to racism, classism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, and more is a critical shift.  We have to expand our scope beyond “carbon tunnel vision” to gain a broader understanding of the complexity of climate change, and to exponentially expand our possible solutions — found largely through partnerships, collective organizing, and community care.

This is an all-church and all-ages event. We will learn new frameworks at the intersection of climate and justice and have the chance to weave together the threads that have always linked our deepest commitments. We will prepare ourselves to enter into a new era of climate action—one that intentionally and faithfully breaks down silos and cultivates relationships that lead to flourishing collaborations that transform our congregations through climate justice.

The Climate Revival Workshop will also include activities for kids age 4-12 throughout the day.  We will have games and nature play on our church playground and grounds throughout the day as well as Climate Workshops led by Eleanor our Director of Family Ministry and Lauren, our Family Ministry Coordinator. In these hands on workshops our kids will explore their deep connections to the natural world and will imagine a future world that is more inclusive and sustainable.

Join us and UU congregations across the country for this two-day event:

  • Saturday September 21st from 10am – 2pm – Workshop aimed at fostering conversations and practices to help us think in new ways. A light lunch will be served and the workshop with be open to all ages.
  • Sunday, September 22nd (9am or 11am service)

We hope you’ll join us and our wider UU community in delving deeper into this important topic.

Meet our Music Director Candidate

We are excited to invite you to be a part of the search for our next Music Director! Katie S. (she/her) is a finalist in our search and will visit Foothills and guest lead music on Sunday and Monday in a variety of settings. Katie is visiting us from Chandler, Arizona where she currently serves at the Music Director at Valley Unitarian Universalist

She has a passion for leading UU congregations in music that inspires, transforms, and aligns with our principles. She has a bachelor’s degree in Music Education with an emphasis in choral, piano and vocal performance, a master’s degree in Adult Education and Training, and is certified in Transformational Life Coaching. Katie and her husband are both accomplished musicians and they share three children and two dogs.

Katie has completed several initial stages of interviewing, including a written interview and two interviews via Zoom with ministers, staff and the Music Director Hiring Committee. She’s also been working with our worship staff for the last two weeks helping to shape the service that she will co-lead with us.

We hope you’ll take one or all of the opportunities to engage with Katie, help her get a sense for our church and help us get a sense for who she is as a music leader.

Music Director Search Process Updates

We are writing with an update regarding our search for our new music director, and to invite your active participation in our next steps.

As a reminder, the process led us to two finalists, both of whom were invited to lead music on a Sunday and work with the choir and other musicians as a preview of their potential role. Over the past few weeks, they have also met with our staff team to prepare for these visits.

After careful consideration, we have decided that one of the candidates will no longer be considered for the position, and we have canceled their visit. Although they demonstrated impressive musical talent, their limited experience with worship planning and familiarity with the UU hymnal and music canon would require training beyond our current capacity. We are grateful for their interest and enthusiasm and have provided them with constructive feedback.

As we move forward, our other candidate, Katie S. remains in the process. It is important to clarify that Katie’s continuation is not an indication of a final decision. Our goal is to ensure that our new Music Director is a great fit for Foothills, both in terms of musical ability, as well as a relational fit in the partnership of both lay and staff ministry.

To this end, we hope you will join us for worship on Sunday the 15th, at the musicians’ gathering (5:30 pm), or choir rehearsal on Monday evening (6:45 pm) —or all of the above (more details coming soon). We need to see Katie S. working and making music with our community, and so our community showing up in full is crucial for our decision-making.

While we are disappointed to let one candidate go, we trust that our process is working as it should, revealing the right information at the right time. We are confident that, with your partnership, we will make the best possible decision for our community, with integrity and open hearts.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement in this important process. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback. We look forward to your participation in Katie S.’ visit on the 15th and 16th, and we greatly value your input.

With gratitude and in partnership,

Rev. Gretchen Haley
Rev. Sean Neil-Barron
Sophia Miller, Summer Musician in Residence
Katie Watkins, Director of Finance and Operations

Enhanced Privacy and Security for our Church Directory

We want to inform you about a significant update to our church directory, managed through Planning Center. This update is aimed at enhancing the security of your personal information and safeguarding our community from potential scams.

Background

Our Church Directory, accessible via ChurchCenter (either on the app or online), is available to those who have been invited. Generally only those who are eligible for membership will be invited. Each member has full control over what information they choose to share within the directory.

What Changed and Why

Recently, Planning Center has made adjustments to the privacy settings in response to increasing reports of scammers exploiting church directories. These individuals have been known to impersonate pastors or trusted church members, deceiving people into giving them money. To combat this, Planning Center has introduced a new “Privacy Mode,” which automatically hides email addresses and phone numbers from public view. Instead, you can now connect with fellow members through a secure “Contact Me” button, allowing you to stay in touch while keeping your personal information protected.

Accessing the Directory

The directory is available only to members or those deeply engaged at Foothills, with access managed by our Foothills Admin Staff. If you would like to be added to the directory and currently do not have access, please let us know by filling out this form.

Deciding What Information to Share

If you’ve been invited to join the directory, you can decide what information to share, including details about your household members. You can choose to share your photo, birthday, address, phone number, and email, as well as which members of your household can be contacted through the secure “Contact Me” process. For more detailed instructions, visit this guide.

How to Contact Someone

Although this change was made by Planning Center, the directory remains a valuable tool for staying connected within our community. To learn how to use the directory effectively and securely, we encourage you to watch the following video:

To reach out to someone, search for their profile in the directory and click the “Contact Me” button. Your message will be sent directly to their primary email address, and any replies will come to your email. If the contact option is not available, it means that the person has chosen not to share their contact information.

An Alternate Way: Sharing Information with Group Members

At Foothills, we recognize that with a large congregation, sharing your information with everyone might not feel comfortable. However, you can still share your contact information with members of your small group or event attendees, such as at a potluck.

Using the ChurchCenter app, you can choose to share your information with the groups you are part of. By default, your name is visible to other group members if chat is enabled for your group, and group leaders can see all your contact information regardless of your privacy settings. You can also decide whether to share your picture, phone number, and email address. These settings can be customized for all groups or adjusted individually for each group.

For more detailed instructions on how to manage your settings, please refer to this guide.

As always we appreciate your feedback and would love to answer your questions.

For questions about accessing or using the directory please contact Jenn Powell.
For questions on Data Privacy contact Rev. Sean.

Policy Corner

Foothills Privacy Policy (3.3.5) emphasizes the importance of giving you control over your personal information. While before this change every person had control over their private information on the directory, the implementation of “Privacy Mode,” further protects private information shared in good faith from falling in the hands of bad actors.

While we could disable this feature and make all contact information visible, we have chosen not to do so. This is primarily to protect our community from exploitation and scams in accordance with our Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (3.3.3.5) policy that mandates we take every measure to prevent exploitation, including in our digital spaces. By enhancing privacy in the directory, we help ensure a safer environment for all members, especially those who may be more vulnerable.
